Poets And Pasties

Sit back.

Sink your mind

Into us;

Tonight we are the main course.

Savour

Our words,

The meat and potatoes

Of our souls.

Enjoy our vegetable

Voices,

Cleaned

Prepped

And cubed

For easy digestion.

The gravy ambience

Of good friends

And good poetry

Will add the right warmth

To the evening.

And our flaky crust?

Take a bow Gary, Amanda, and Andy!

This poem was written as a special piece for the very first 'Poets and ...' night in Manchester. The bi-monthly event is co-hosted by my friend, Andy Nicholson, and each night features a new food item. For the first night, pasties were chosen, so I wrote 'Poets and Pasties' as an introduction to both the night and my work with KyPoetry. Since the event features food, I chose to mix culinary ideas throughout the poem to emphasise this. Specifically, I looked at a recipe for pasties, and worked to mention the traditional ingredients in the poem. The final two stanzas:

And our flaky crust?

Take a bow Gary, Amanda, and Andy!

underline the humour of the piece, and give a well deserved nod to the three organisers and hosts of the event, Gary Morris, Amanda Speakman, and Andy Nicholson.
