Poets And Pasties

Sit back.

Sink your mind

Into us;

Tonight we are the main course.

Savour

Our words,

The meat and potatoes

Of our souls.

Enjoy our vegetable

Voices,

Cleaned

Prepped

And cubed

For easy digestion.

The gravy ambience

Of good friends

And good poetry

Will add the right warmth

To the evening.

And our flaky crust?

Take a bow Gary, Amanda, and Andy!

The first sound heard in this piece is a low rumble that begins after the close of the spoken title, becoming the background atmosphere. I chose this sound because it has a slightly edgy, unsettled feel to it. Although the over all voice of the poem is humourous, it is a dark humour: the poem compares poets' words and thoughts to food for consumption, giving it a cannibalistic feel. I am a huge fan of the splat film genre, and I think it shows in this piece. I added a falling keyboard under the first words:

Sit back

to help pull the audience audibly back in their seats. This sound continues to fall through the stanza:

Sink your mind

Into us;

Tonight we are the main course.

before ending. An arpeggiated keyboard is used to symbolise the relaxed and social feeling of the night during:

The gravy ambience

Of good friends

And good poetry

Will add the right warmth to the evening.

On the line:

And our flaky crust?

I chose to use an upward swinging multi-layered keyboard sound to add a questioning feel to the words. I also wanted a quirky, funny sound that brought the poem back to a humourous voice. The low rumble is faded out at the end of the piece.
