Licorice - Herb Uses

WARNING - Do not give this herb to pregnant women, people with high blood pressure, kidney disease, or persons taking digoxin-based medication. Excess use causes water retention and raised blood pressure.

Culinary (eaten)

Roots are boiled to extract the familiar black substance used in licorice confectionery, and is sold dried to eat.

Decoction (like a broth)

Simmer the herb for 15-30 minutes and strain. A Decoction is the best method for roots. Standard quantities are 75g fresh or 30g dried herb to 500ml water. The Decoction must be used on the same day.

Compress

A Compress is made by soaking a clean cloth in a hot Decoction and applying externally to the affected area.
