WARNING
- Do not give this herb to pregnant women, people with
high blood pressure, kidney disease, or persons taking digoxin-based medication.
Excess use causes water retention and raised blood pressure.
Culinary (eaten)
- Roots are boiled to extract the familiar black substance
used in licorice confectionery, and is sold dried to eat.
Decoction
- Simmer the herb for 15-30 minutes and strain. A Decoction
is the best method for roots. Standard quantities are 75g fresh or 30g
dried herb to 500ml water. The Decoction must be used on the same day.
Compress
- A Compress is made by soaking a clean cloth in a
hot Decoction and applying externally to the affected area.
