PERFORMANCE POETRY - BEGINNER pg. 2

4. If you'll be reading your work from sheets, try to be familiar enough with your poems to look up at the audience. If you can get to the point where you're barely consulting your sheets, you've almost got it memorised. A little more work on your part can get you down to notecards, which are far less invasive on stage than sheets of paper.
5. If you have a digital video camera, try filming yourself reading your work in a standing position. If not, ask a friend or family member to watch you and tell you the following. Do you stand upright and look good, or are you moving your weight around and generally looking uncomfortable? A great speaker can look terrible and lose their audience right away. Aim for a comfortable appearance, not a rigid one.
6. Practice in front of a mirror. A tried and true rehearsal mode for a lot of artists.
Get cracking on it, and have fun!
