DJ Doctor When - Biography
![]()
Like all great DJs Doctor When has slaved hard in the studios to sculpt his sound, using techno rhythms and sampled loops in a hardcore psychedelic rave style. Unlike all DJs, Doctor When began crafting his music in the techno-wasteland of Ireland. His musical isolation infused with manic energy has generated a unique sound for sophisticated clubbers who want more from their dance music. Doctor When's long-awaited full-length release is due out in 2012.
Doctor When grew up in an enviable position; his father, Terence Bourne is a well known flamenco guitarist (www.terencephillipbourne.com) and music always surrounded him. As a child Doctor When had access to a music shop through his father's connections. Making full use of it, Doctor When puttered around on keyboards and organs every chance he could. His schooling gave him an additional opportunity to train on drums.
Unwilling to settle on just one instrument, Doctor When began experimenting on his computer with Dance Ejay 2 to generate his own tracks in 2002. Too far away from the mainstream techno clubs on the continent to hear what was currently hot on the dance floor, Doctor When worked in secrecy until he was discovered by Dark World International.
Upgrading his sampling software to Techno Ejay 4 (Rave), Doctor When was persuaded to release three original songs on the Dark World International promotional CD 'Noorderslag 2006' while completing his studio training at the Dark World Experimental School of Music. The massive attention he received from techno and rave fans prompted him to continue writing new material.
According to Doctor When, his move from computers to studio recording has given him more control over his sound. "Although many of my early recordings were naturally experimental in nature and fairly limited due to inbuilt sample banks, the recent spurt of live studio work in Dark World studios has given me endless possibilities of live sampling, mixing and remixing of my own tracks and samples. I'm really looking forward to this summer, where I'll be able to get back into the studio and get back to brewing up some more 24 track experimental Madness! The short term plan is to get a substantial stash of studio tracks done and mixed to send it out for release hopefully by the end of the year, with the eventual goal of playing out live further down the road, hopefully advancing to European clubs and venues when the time comes."
In anticipation of his upcoming full-length CD, Doctor When has released 'Stilton Dreams' as a DRM free internet download. Immediately becoming one of the most accessed MP3 downloads at www.darkworld.com, 'Stilton Dreams' has now been spidered to MP3 sites around the world. New tracks from Doctor When also appear on Dark World's 'Winter Dance Compilation 2008' (physical CD manufactured by CreateSpace), available now online.
