For Dark World artists, Summer 2008 was
the summer of NIN remixes. AndyN, a friend of Dark World from the UK, told
Kylyra about the remixes that Trent was allowing on his website. This led
to Kristi asking the artists to come up with mixes that were based on NIN
songs, but had the flavour of the Dark World artist or band doing the track.
9 tracks in total got finished and are now up on the NIN site, free to
download. They contain performances from Kylyra, Deemed Psychotic, Infinisynth,
Future Dialogue, Tor's Angst, TechnoKy and Doctor When. The tracks were
not simple computer remixes. Each artist took their song into the Dark
World Studio which has no computer. Descriptions of each track can be found
below. |
a Statement from Kristi Ameringer about the remixes
Over the past 14 years I've watched Dark World artists
work tremendously hard in the studio to achieve their own sound. There's
been times that's been difficult; as with any small label Dark World has
always had to operate within a tight budget, and that's sometimes meant
we've had to record our artists with very limited equipment.
The Nine Inch Nails remixes that Dark World artists
have worked on truly showcase the talents and versatility of everyone involved.
Each song has the band or artist's signature sound, and each stands apart
from the other. I find it amazing that all of these remixes were done in
one studio, on essentially the same equipment. I am very proud of the sound
captured for each of the remixes, and think all the artists, engineers,
and producers deserve recognition for their talented performances and hard
work.

| Kylyra VS NIN |
Capital
G (Ky duet mix)

(from Kylyra) I stripped down the original song version,
then added my own rhythm additions, piano, strings, and vocals. It was
a lot of fun to sing a duet with Trent, and we ran my vocals drier than
in the past to match Trent's sound as closely as possible. |
| Deemed Psychotic VS NIN |
35
ghosts (From Behind de Deemed Psychotic mix)
http://remix.nin.com/play/mix?id=10585
|
(from Tor) Kristi wanted at least one from Deemed, so my
sister and I replaced most of Trent's tracks (part by part) with sounds
and instruments from Deemed Psychotic. Then Kylyra put in the final keyboard
tracks. I got this urge to sing something from 'The 1st' over the top.
'From Behind' seemed to fit perfectly to me so that's why, but honestly
I did not know until the song was first re-recorded that I would even sing
on it. This track sounds 'Deemed' and probably strays quite far from NIN's
instrumental. |
| Infinisynth VS NIN |
34
ghosts (Tor's Infinisynthy Together mix)
http://remix.nin.com/play/mix?id=10578
|
(from Tor) This is probably the closest mix I did to the
original. This was the first track finished this summer. It originally
was an instrumental but after playing a new bass line and adding two guitar
tracks (replacing a banjo and mandola) I got the idea for the words I sung
over it all. The lines I sing are 'Out of Chaos', 'Life it grows', and
'We're coming together'. I ended up doing five vocal tracks which I mixed
in, three with the above words, two making only sounds. I still have not
heard Trent's original mix of the track, but I do think I strayed far from
it. |
| Future Dialogue VS NIN |
26
Ghosts (traditional hole mix)
http://remix.nin.com/play/mix?id=11353
|
(from Tor) In trying to split songs between Dark World
artists, I got 34 & 26 Ghosts to work on,. I wanted to do three, so
I did 2 versions of 26 Ghosts. I recorded the Future Dialogue version first.
I played the bass and guitars on this with Mic and I singing. Rhythms were
played with FD instruments. We used the lyrics of 'Head like a Hole' and
tried to make a Irish Traditional performance of the track, including recording
an audience to blend in. I know it was probably the last thing a NIN fan
wanted to hear and is the most 'artsy' remix I did, but Mic and I did enjoy
doing it. Must Have track for fans of Future Dialogue though. |
| Tor's Angst VS NIN |
26
Ghosts (heresy mix)
http://remix.nin.com/play/mix?id=11061
|
(from Tor) So with these remixes pushing the Angst sessions
into October, I needed to do a Angsty remix. I first re-recorded his tracks
with Tor's Angst instruments, samples and sounds. Then I sang in the three
voices using NIN's 'Heresy' as the song overlay. Because they use the same
bass signal, I used the bass track from the Future Dialogue remix (yes,
same bass track used in both remixes). I was impressed with the difference
between both remixes, even though they used the same idea. |
| Kylyra VS NIN |
10
Ghosts (Kylyra's Epik Nightmare mix)
http://remix.nin.com/play/mix?id=11039
|
(from Kylyra) When I first started this remix I wasn't
sure about what was going on. 10 Ghosts had a different tempo than my song
Epik, so I chose to sample from Epik and lay the samples over 10 Ghosts.
The final song is fantastic, and one of my favourites to listen to. |
| TechnoKy VS NIN |
19
Ghosts (TechnoKy mix)
http://remix.nin.com/play/mix?id=11037
|
(from Kylyra) I sampled some of NIN's more interesting
sounds from 19 Ghosts, then overlaid them onto a song underlay for TechnoKy.
This is just a fun club mix to me. |
| Deemed Psychotic VS NIN |
The
Psychotic Piggy
http://remix.nin.com/play/mix?id=11355
|
(from Tor) Deemed fans might remember this version from
Deemed's live set a few years back. It is one of Kylyra's favourite tracks
from NIN, she really likes singing the "pig, pig, piggy, pig, pig,
pig" part (can you tell?). So she and I thought it was time to release
a recording of our Psychotic Piggy to our fans, and Trent's too (I think
it works for both). |
| Doctor When VS NIN |
God
Given (Doctor When mix)
http://remix.nin.com/play/mix?id=11354
|
(from Doctor When) A mutated but non-mutilated rendition
of 'God Given' with hardcore undertones and a cacophony of blended
noises that retains a danceable and catchy quality.
you'll love it, your neighbours will hate it! |
